Paint…Brush…Action!

The students are learning about famous artists this month. Why not explore a fun & messy one! Jackson Pollock used an “action painting” technique of dripping and splashing paint on a canvas, and now it’s time to let your kiddos try it out for themselves! This might be an activity best suited for outside. This is a messy and creative task so get ready!  Let your children dip paint brushes in paint and splash it onto a paper or canvas (unfolded paper grocery bags work great!) let them explore any body movement that feels good with their paint and canvas!

Materials:

  • Paint
  • Paint Brushes
  • Paper or Canvas

Age-appropriate Adaptations:

  • Two-year-olds—Make sure you get your kiddo into clothes you don’t mind getting messy! Ask your child to name colors as he splashes them onto the paper. Make sure you show your child how to drip the paint by getting involved yourself!
  • Three-year-olds—Have the child pick out his or her own colors and tools to paint with. Ask them what the painting means to them or what they can see in the random shapes and splashes. Talk to your child about what it means to be an artist.
  • Four-/Five-year-olds—Find a clip on YouTube of Pollock’s technique and ask your child what they think about it. Have the children use descriptive words to tell you about their work.  Help you child look up some information on Jackson Pollock and his art!
